The Johnstone family has been in the quarry game for three generations.
In the 1930s Ron Johnstone started a carrier business, servicing the Inglewood (south eastern QLD) area. Ron Johnstone Carrier provided gravel, sand, bags of wheat, logs for sawmills and power poles. 1966 saw Ron’s fourth son Ian joining him and learning the ropes.
In 1979 Ian and his wife Lee-Anne moved to the Moree area and opened the partnership Johnstone Gravel with Ian’s younger brother and his wife. The purchase of Gwydir Concrete in 1987 resulted in the commencement of Johnstone Ready Mixed Concrete Pty Ltd, followed by many improvements over the years. These include the construction and acquisition of quarries, sand screening plants, concrete batching plants in Mungindi, Warialda, Burren Junction and Croppa Creek and the purchase of Williams Concrete and a quarry in Narrabri.
Ian’s youngest son Brock moved to Narrabri in 2003 to take on the role of operations manager of Johnstone Ready Mixed Concrete Pty Ltd - Narrabri, comprised of the concrete yard previously known as Williams Concrete and the hard rock quarry at Wave Hill previously owned by Dickinson Concrete. Brock built the concrete and quarry business up over the following years, carrying out projects such as the Narrabri Hospital re-development, Woolworths, The Mac Village, Shannon Estate, bridge building, Whitehaven Coal and Idemitsu Coal.
On July 1st 2011, Johnstone Ready Mixed Concrete Pty Ltd split into two separate, new companies. The Narrabri company is now called Johnstone Concrete & Landscape Supplies Pty Ltd (JCLS ) and continues to provide high quality concrete, quarry materials and landscape supplies for local residential and commercial development.
Today, Brock manages the concrete yard. Ian and Lee-Anne’s eldest son Clint manages the quarry operations, which are currently expanding and improving on a large scale.
Including the directors Ian and Lee-Anne and the other family members, JCLS now employs over 20 qualified, experienced workers who all live in the wider Narrabri area with their families. As an added commitment to ensuring a high standard of performance, many of the staff have completed training courses relating to Concrete Technology, Work Cover, Construction Civil Plant, Mining, Accounting, MYOB and First Aid, to name but a few.
